Parametric model of VT area functions: vowels and consonants

چکیده
This is an extension of earlier work on vocal tract area function modelling (Fant, 1960, 1992, 1993; Lin, 1990) retaining a minimum of three independent control parameters in a more complex, physiologically oriented model providing a flexible choice of detail structure. Systematic perturbation analysis of vocal tract boundary conditions and of values of the independent control parameters have been carried out. These data supplement calculated transfer functions and nomograms of formant frequencies as a function of the place, Xc ,and the area, Ac, of a vocal tract constriction and the lip-parameter lo/Ao. Compensatory articulations providing almost the same formant frequency patterns with substantially different choice of control parameters are discussed. Additional vocal tract area function structures and control parameters for simulating consonantal articulations are introduced. Essential properties of laterals, nasals and retroflex articulations have been simulated Inversion experiments on steady state vowels have been successful but there remains to define and test possible constraints for the handling of variations in

Deriving vocal-tract area functions from midsagittal profiles and formant frequencies: A new model for vowels and fricative consonants based on experimental data
In order to achieve better understanding of the articulatory-acoustic relationships, more data are still very much needed. The two-fold aim of the present study was thus (1) to provide a set of coherent midsagittal functions, area functions and formant frequencies, for a small corpus of vowels and fricative consonants produced by one subject, and (2) to derive a midsagittal profile to area func...
متن کاملOn acoustic salience of vowels and consonants predicted from articulatory models
This presentation deals on acoustic salience of vowels and consonants predicted from articulatory modeling (AM). An articulatory model describes vocal tract (VT) profiles with a small number of parameters that are interpretable in phonetic terms. Such a modeling allows a better understanding of the relationship between articulatory configurations and acoustic patterns. The goal of this paper is...
متن کاملA Unified Model of Categorical Effects in Consonant and Vowel Perception
Consonants and vowels differ in the extent to which they are perceived categorically. We use a Bayesian model of speech perception to explore factors that might cause this difference. Simulations show that perception of vowels, fricatives, and stop consonants can all be captured under a single model in which listeners use their knowledge of phonetic categories to infer the sound that a speaker ...
متن کاملVocal-tract area-function parameters from formant frequencies
The basic three-pararneter vocal tract area function model of Fant [2] has been extended to allow for asymmetry and variable length of the tongue hump section as well as variations of the VT overalllength. An important class of articulations are those that conform with this model, mostly vowel sounds and consonants wi~hout . apical . modification or a secondary posterior art1culatton. Starmg ou...
متن کاملRecovering gestures from speech signals: a preliminary study for nasal vowels
For nasal vowels, a gesture as simple as the lowering of the velum produces complex acoustic spectra. However, we still find a relative simplicity in the perceptual space; nasality is perceived easily. In this preliminary study, we use statistic method to recover the gesture of the velum. In order to reduce the extreme variability of nasal vowels, we introduced a simulation based on Maeda’s mod...
